January brings the new calendar year, but we are already into the third Church Season in the Liturgical Year, Epiphany.  This time of the year celebrates the “in-breaking” of God into our world in the person of Jesus Christ.  We will begin by remembering the Naming of Jesus in the Temple , and then we will proceed to Christ’s Baptism, which is the start of His Ministry with and for you and me.

1/1: The Holy Name of Jesus

After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.        -Luke 2:21

On this New Year’s Day, we will celebrate both The Holy Name of Jesus, for this is the eighth day after His Nativity, and also the Epiphany of Our Lord, which is observed on January 6th.  Thus, our choir anthem has an Epiphany ring, Follow That Star, and our communion piece is The Cold Night Is Quiet.  We will also ask God’s blessing upon us as together we will enter into a New Year.

Children’s Homily: “What’s In a Name?” Luke 2

Homily: “Fulfillment” Luke 2:15-21

1/8:The Baptism of Our Lord

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan .

The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan was the start of his mission to humankind, to those of us who inhabit this earth.  Thus, Jesus sanctified the waters for all generations of Christians to follow.  We will remember this day by renewing our Vows of Baptism and by receiving the sprinkling of the hallowed waters.  The choir anthem relates to the day’s scripture, He Has Done Marvelous Things, and at communion we hear, Light of Mine.

Children’s Homily:  “Creation Light” Genesis 1:1-5

Homily: “Baptized”    Mark 1:4-11

1/15: The 2nd Sunday After The Epiphany

Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth ?”  Philip said to him, “Come and see.”               -John 1:46

We will spend our sermon time this week studying the “call” of the Disciples in the Gospel of John.  These important verses can point us in the right direction as we in our time “call” others to follow Jesus.  The choir anthem is one of praise,

All That Have Life and Breath, and we will hear from our children as they sing Circle Song.

Children’s Homily: “God Calling”  1 Sam 3:1-10

Homily: “Come and See”   John 1:43 -51

1/22: The 3rd Sunday After The Epiphany

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee , proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”            -Mark 1:14 -15

We return to Mark, but we continue to hear of the calling of the Disciples, this time the fishermen. Our text centers on the message of Mark, which is summarized succinctly in the above two verses.  The handbells will play Mary, Did You Know?, and the anthem echoes the Gospel theme very nicely, The Kingdom of God .

Children’s Homily: “Fishing”   Mark 1:14-20

Homily: “Gospel In Miniature”  Mark 1:14-20

1/29: The 4th Sunday After The Epiphany

They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.                           -Mark 1:22

Remembering that we are an organic part of the Church of Jesus Christ, the anthem will rightly be

Bless This House of Worship.  We will also be graced by our young people of the Chamber Chimes who will play The Angelus.  We will focus on the meaning of true authority in the proclamation of God’s Word.  To whom should we listen?

Children’s Homily: “Puffing Up!”  1 Cor. 8:1-13

Homily: “Real & True Authority”  Mark 1:21-28
